BRIEF HISTORICAL ACCOUNT
The island of Leros has an area of approximately 53 sq. Km. It is a hilly island with small flat lands. Many uninhabited islets, of which Archangelos is the biggest, surround Leros north and east.
Its shape is irregular while two isthmus and seven bays divide it into three sections. From North to South we meet Partheni, Plefoutis, Alinda, Panteli, Ksirokampos, Lakki and Gourna.
The island consists of one Municipality and its capital is Aghia Marina.
Leros is also known as the island of Artemis. It is the birthplace of the historian Ferekides and the philosopher Demodocus.
Phoenicians, Leleges and Kares were the first inhabitants of the island. Leros participated actively in the Trojan War. Leros and Miletus, by virtue of their vicinity, developed tight financial, cultural and political relations, while Leros was strongly influenced by the Ionian culture. In 494 BC the Persians occupied both islands.
During the Peloponnesian War, Leros followed the Athenian democratic system. Its safe bays sheltered frequently the belligerents. It was eventually occupied by the Spartans and thereafter shared the fate of the rest Dodecanese islands during the sovereignty of Alexander the Great and his successors’ as well as during the Roman and Byzantine times.
In 1309 the Knights of St. John conquered the island and held it up to 1521, the year it succumbed to the Ottomans.
In 1821 Ioannis Symbekis along with other citizens of Leros took part in the Greek War of Independence. The island became an important base of refit for the Greek fleet. After the war, Leros was included in the liberated part of Greece and came under the jurisdiction of the Provisional Commissioner of East Sporades. However, the Treaty of Constantinople in 1832 left Dodecanese out of the borders of the newly established Greek state and included Leros in Chios santzaki (province). Since it belonged to the privileged islands, Leros was entitled to a kind of autonomy.
The education of the island started flourishing at the end of the 19th cent. Donations received from simple citizens as well as from the Fraternity of Leros’ emigrants to Cairo, contributed to schools’ construction. Therefore, in 1882 the first Greek school was built there. Later, in 1886, followed the Urban school and in 1912 the Nilolaideon girls’ school and the Malachieion kindergarten. Leros fathered many local and national benefactors, such as Vassilios Nikolaides, Nikolaos Tsigadas, Panayiotis Trakkas, Theologos Markopoulos, Nikitas Roussos, Theodoros Malachias, Parissis Bellenis et al.
Prominent men of Leros are Emmanuel Karagiannopoulos, Ioannis Pizanes, Emmanuel Gedeon, Georgios Roussos and Theologos Nikoloudes. In 1912 the Italian warship “San Giorgio” occupied Leros in virtue of the Italian-Turkish war. Due to its natural havens, the Italians armed the island and turned it into a reinforced naval base as well as into an aircraft station. In the late twenties important fortification works took place and in the thirties a whole new town, Lakki, was built.
In 1923 the Treaty of Lausanne ceded definitely the islands to Italy. Since the Italian policy aimed at their Italianizing, Greek education was prohibited and the orthodox clergy was pursued.
In 1940 Italy fought alongside the Germany while Leros was harassed and bombarded by the English air force.
On the 8th of September 1943 the Italians weak to continue the war by the Germans, signed a truce and came over to the Allies’ side.
After the Italian truce, English reinforces arrived at Leros. The island suffered by the continuous German bombardments.
On the 26th of September German airplanes sank the glorious greek destroyer “Vassillissa Olga” and the english “Intrepid” in Lakki.
On the 18th of November after harsh battles, the Germans conquered the island and remained on it until the 8th of May, the day their country surrendered. Then the English occupation started and lasted until the 31st of May 1947. On the 7th of March 1948 Leros was formally incorporated with the rest of the Dodecanese to Greece.
